Endodontic Surgery/Root End Surgery
Safe, Simple Microsurgery Treatment
Sometimes, a non-surgical root canal may not be the best way to save your tooth. In these situations, dental microsurgery can be a more effective option. Endodontic surgery can help address issues like small fractures, missed canals, calcium deposits, root end fillings or damage to the root surfaces or surrounding bone.

Surgery Focused on Your Comfort and Recovery
Don’t worry if surgery is recommended. Advances in technology like digital imaging and operating microscopes make these procedures quick, comfortable and highly successful.
There are many surgical procedures that can be performed to save a tooth. The most common is called an apicoectomy (or root end resection). This procedure is performed when inflammation or infection persists in the bony area around the end of your tooth after a root canal procedure.
During a root end surgery, an incision is made in the gum tissue to access the inflamed or infected tissue at the tip of your root. The damaged tissue and the root tip are then removed. A small filling will be placed to seal the root canal, and a few stitches will help the tissue heal.
Most patients return to normal activities the next day, and post-surgical discomfort is generally mild. Over the next few months, the bone around the end of the root will heal. For in-depth information regarding root end filling endodontic surgery, visit the American Association of Endodontists.
