What is root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy (endodontics) involves the removal of all inflammation and infection from the root canal system of a tooth. During the treatment, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and any abscesses are drained. The root canal is then cleaned, and the tooth may be temporarily restored to allow symptoms to resolve before a permanent crown is applied. Permanent crowns are recommended on all back teeth after endodontic treatment.

Why is root canal therapy needed?

Root canal therapy is necessary when the nerve of a tooth becomes damaged by bacteria, a traumatic blow or cracks. Root canal therapy lets you keep your natural tooth by restoring it to a healthy state, rather than replacing it with an artificial tooth.

Will the treatment be painful?

Our goal is to ensure your procedure is as painless as possible. If treatment is necessary, we’ll inject a small amount of anesthetic to gently numb the area around the affected tooth so you won’t feel discomfort. For most patients, the numbness wears off after 2-3 hours.

Will I need X-rays?

We’ll take X-rays during your visit. If you have X-rays from your general dentist, please bring them with you. We use the latest digital imaging technology, which allows us to quickly determine the best course of treatment. Digital X-rays also reduce your radiation exposure.

How long does root canal treatment take?

Root canal treatment can usually be completed in one visit. In some cases, a second visit may be required. Please allow approximately two hours for your appointment.

What should I do after my root canal treatment?

You’ll be given instructions by our team after your treatment. If you’ve been prescribed pain relievers or antibiotics, please follow the directions. It is often necessary to return to your general dentist to receive the appropriate restoration (a cap or a crown), which will protect your tooth. If you don’t get the proper restoration, there’s an increased risk of treatment failure, tooth fracture, or even tooth loss.

Will I need to return to your office for follow-ups after the procedure is finished?

Yes, we recommend patients return for a follow-up appointment 6-12 months after their procedure. Our team will assist in scheduling your follow-up appointment at the completion of your treatment.

What if the tooth is still uncomfortable?

It’s normal to experience some discomfort for 1-2 weeks after treatment. Our team will provide after-care instructions that will include information on managing any pain and discomfort. If you experience pain you can’t control with over-the-counter pain relievers, or if you notice any facial swelling, please call our office right away.

What if my original root canal is re-infected?

Root canal treatment is usually very successful, but in rare cases, infection can return. When this happens, the treatment can be repeated or other options may be considered. We will discuss all your treatment options after an examination.

What if I don’t have the root canal treatment?

The alternative to root canal therapy is removing the tooth. Leaving an infected tooth in your mouth can result in severe pain or swelling, which could even require hospitalization. While some people may prefer an extraction, it is usually best to keep your natural teeth whenever possible.

Do you have methods of dealing with dental anxiety?

Yes! Our goal is to make you and the procedure as comfortable as possible. If you have dental anxiety, please let us know when scheduling your appointment and we will discuss all available options with you.

Do I need to take an antibiotic before treatment?

Some medical conditions may require taking an antibiotic before your dental procedure. If you have a medical condition that may require an antibiotic, please let us know. A consultation with your physician may be needed to determine if this is necessary.
